Diets – The hard Truth

We all want to believe there is a “secret reason” why we have gained so much weight over the past few years or can’t seem to lose it no matter what we try blaming it all on a slow metabolism or genetics. So, when a trendy new diet comes along with a deeply emersed zealot attached to it. Who is screaming at you carbs are evil, fat is evil, protein is evil, and plants are evil? In fact, pick any combination of the latter, and it’s all evil and must be banished from your life IMMEDIATELY! You suddenly feel justified in your belief.

This belief is then strong enough to justify you cutting out entire food groups from your everyday lifestyle, and 9 times out of 10, forces you into a calorie deficit because basically, you have sod all left to eat. Body fat is then inevitably lost due to the CALORIE DEFICIT. Making the whole experience mildly tolerable, if only for a few weeks, based upon such sudden results before the inevitable happens. You fall off the wagon and into an evil foods binge because the whole thing was completely unsustainable.

The irony here is that the diet works really well for a small majority of the population who actually enjoy eating on such a restricted system. This small group do indeed see great results, and this causes them to become those diet zealots that got you into the diet in the first place!

The hundreds of people who didn’t succeed with the diet don’t say anything because they feel like they failed again. You are left feeling like you’re a broken failure because everyone who did well is screaming about it. The cycle continues, leaving you to fall victim to the next fad diet.

What if we actually took responsibility? What if we owned the fact that most of the time, myself included, will eat mindlessly in front of the TV out of boredom, or we just have very little self-control around food at certain times due to mood or more deeply ingrained emotional hooks, which are entirely valid reasons? They just need to be recognised and managed.

How liberating would it feel to know and understand you had the power to break the cycle?

Knowing your body converts food into energy so you can live, breathe and move around.

All foods have different energy values depending on what they are made of. The more food you eat, the more you store, depending on how much energy you use to move around daily.

Free food tracking apps allow you to learn your favourite foods’ energy values. I personally use MyFitnessPal, but other apps are available.

These apps can give you guidelines for your own energy values based on your current age, weight and height. They then deduct calories from your personal energy requirements based on what you scan or manually enter into the app.

You can then make better conscious and educated decisions about what foods you choose to eat and in what quantities.

Freeing you from the Fad dieting chains that bind you to fear food.
